Beyond Code
What a system is actually doing, and whether anyone's home to notice — asked once at the scale of code, then again descending through biology, chemistry, and physics.
Cells & circuits
The brain is the one system I didn't build that still runs the show. I keep circling back to how circuits of neurons turn into memory, attention, and a sense of continuity — and where the metaphor of software “running on” hardware breaks down.
Molecules & receptors
One molecule binding one receptor can rewrite mood, perception, or motivation for hours. Pharmacology is where neuroscience gets a dial you can actually turn — proof that the mind is downstream of chemistry, whatever else it also is.
Fields & the Planck limit
Underneath molecules, the rules stop looking like the ones I write software against — no definite state until something interacts with it. I'm not chasing quantum-consciousness theories, just the plain strangeness of a universe that seems to need an observer at all.
The observer
Every scale above this one describes a system from the outside. This is the one question none of them answer: why does any of it feel like something, from the inside? I don't have it solved — I just think it's the most interesting open problem there is.
